Writer's picture: Mercy IburuomaMercy Iburuoma

The practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a horrifying violation of human rights and is not acceptable in our society. Extreme cultural and political traditions from various regions of the world hold that it is a permanent treatment that is required for women's health and the preservation of their virginity. FGM has been diagnosed in an estimated 105 million women and girls, and 35 million have had the surgery done. Read more about FGM here

The World Health Organization, the United Nations, and numerous other international organizations all denounce FGM as a violation of human rights and call for its outlawing. FGM is still a widespread practice that harms too many women and girls, despite gradual progress toward its abolition. See more info here

Below are issues women deal with as a result of FGM:

● Physical and psychological scars.

● Increased risk of childbirth bleeding and childbirth complications.

● Infections, infertility, and sexual dysfunction.

● Psychological trauma.

Ways in which we can stop FGM include:

● Raising awareness of the situation.

● Providing pointers and support to those who have experienced FGM

● Supplying material and monetary assistance to organizations that seek to eradicate FGM.

We can and must end FGM, and to do that, we need everyone working together—activists, health professionals, policymakers, and community members. That is why I am encouraging all women to be strong and work together to put FGM to an end and make a difference. The first way to do that is by educating ourselves so we can raise more awareness. This is one of the main purposes of this blog post.

Together, we can promote change and work to eliminate the negative effects of FGM. We can inspire others to join us in calling for an end to this destructive practice by spreading knowledge of the risks FGM presents to women and girls.
